Delayed or non-linear brake response creates unpredictable block deceleration and increased risk of crown and floor collisions. The RCP Eddy Current Brake Controller uses modern power electronic components and SCR technology to supply 250VDC to auxiliary brake coils rapidly and linearly across all control ranges — from minimum input to full application.
Power is derived from a three-phase full-wave silicon-controlled rectifier assembly supplied by a 30KVA, 60Hz, 440VAC three-phase transformer, with input signal from an intrinsically safe brake handle. The system is designed as a direct replacement for the Baylor 1025 and Baylor 2025 brake control systems.
System Performance
SCR-controlled power delivery ensures voltage is applied to the brake coils with minimal lag between handle input and brake response. The system maintains linear power output across the full control range, avoiding the stepped or non-linear response associated with older relay-based brake controllers. Compatibility extends across a wide range of Eddy Current brake types.
Operator Interface
System status is monitored and reviewed via a 7″ colour panel display, providing operators with real-time visibility of brake system condition. Display pages include fault monitoring, battery backup status, active alarms, alarm history, system diagnostics, maintenance, and setup functions — consolidating brake system information into a single accessible interface at the driller’s position.
Configuration & Installation
Depending on installation requirements, brake controllers are available in safe area installation with the field devices being hazardous area compliant, designed to suit rig-specific layouts. RCP can configure the system to meet the enclosure, certification, and control architecture requirements of the installation.
